Social work galore!

BSW graduate continuing on with her MSW. Reblogs progressive stances on social work and feminism. I also reblog other bits of randomness, but this blog is purely dedicated to social welfare/social justice issues/social work practice.

"14-year-old Parkview High School Freshman, Caleb Christian was concerned about the number of incidents of police abuse in the news.  Still, he knew there were many good police officers in various communities, but had no way of figuring out which communities were highly rated and which were not.

So, together with his two older sisters: Parkview High School senior Ima Christian, and Gwinnett School of Math, Science, and Technology sophomore, Asha Christian, they founded a mobile app development company– Pinetart Inc., under which they created a mobile app called Five-O.

Five-O, allows citizens to enter the details of every interaction with a police officer.  It also allows them to rate that officer in terms of courtesy and professionalism and provides the ability to enter a short description of what transpired.  These details are captured for every county in the United States. Citizen race and age information data is also captured.

Additionally, Five-O allows citizens to store the details of each encounter with law enforcement; this provides convenient access to critical information needed for legal action or commendation.”

Feminism Shouldn't Make Men Comfortable--Mychal Denzel Smith

As a graduate student I developed a method of listening that I called the Schrödinger’s cat method of listening. I borrowed this from a famous thought experiment introduced by the physicist Schrödinger. The really short version is that there is a cat in a box and its fate depends on the disposition of a subatomic particle. Basically, Schrödinger was arguing that one interpretation of quantum physics implied that the cat could be both alive and dead until the box is opened.

And while the independent truth is that the cat is either alive or dead whether or not someone is looking at it, to the person staring at the box both realities are possible.

It’s the same when listening to clients’ stories. Is there a truth that I have not yet grasped? Yes, whatever is true is real whether or not I hear or understand it. Yet, to me as the clinician the truth is yet unknown, so I hold all possibilities as both true and untrue.

In this way, I can non-judgmentally approach people holding all of these possibilities until I better understand what is real.

"Don't let people get to you"

realsocialskills:

I don’t know about you, but I’ve experienced this a lot:

  • I’ll talk about someone being mean or bigoted towards me.
  • And someone will say something like “Don’t let them get to you”, or
  • "Don’t ever let people get under your skin like that, they’re not worth it"

And in my experience, that always…

Guys, look. They finally made a baby stroller for wheelchair-bound mothers. This is so important.

My wife is a physical therapist.  She started tearing up when I showed this to her.

This is so lovely.

I came out as a transman to my LGBT group.
My group hosted an event a couple weeks later and I was introduced with male pronouns and my new name without question. Their willingness to accept me so easily meant so much more than I could ever say.
